Common Trailer Flooring Material Myths
Choosing a dry van trailer floor may seem like a straightforward decision. Compare a few specifications, look at the price, then choose the one that appears to be best for you.
But appearances can be deceiving. Flooring materials have more variables than you might think. Even the same flooring materials can vary in quality and sustainability based on where and how they were manufactured.

Myth 1: “All hardwood dry van trailer floors are basically the same.”
Oak and maple may both be categorized as hardwoods, but that doesn’t mean they deliver the same performance.
Different wood species have different levels of density, strength, decay resistance and moisture tolerance. These qualities can affect how well a floor withstands forklift traffic, heavy/uneven loads and changing weather conditions.
The quality of the finished floor also depends on how it was manufactured. Drying methods, defect removal, strip selection, lamination and consistency all influence its strength and durability.
Myth 2:“A thicker floor is a stronger floor.”
While thickness is one of the easiest measurements to compare, it can mistakenly become a shorthand for strength. More material does not automatically mean better performance.
A dry van trailer floor’s strength also depends on its species, construction, lamination, adhesive system, reinforcement and ability to distribute loads. A thicker floor made from less durable or inconsistent materials may not perform as well as a thinner system designed to use its materials more efficiently.

This is why fleets should look at total life cycle value (ROI) rather than treating flooring as a commodity. Paying more for a floor that lasts longer, requires less maintenance and stays reliably in service may produce a lower overall cost than selecting the least expensive option up front.
Myth 5:“Solid hardwood floors are less environmentally sustainable.”
Many fleets today are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint, including finding dry van trailer flooring made from sustainable materials. However, this goal shouldn’t keep fleets from choosing solid hardwood.
